The Director, Clinical Decision Support (CDS) provides strategic leadership for Virginia Mason’s clinical quality measurement and improvement efforts. Works in close collaboration with medical staff and operational leaders and information systems to foster improvements in the quality, safety, and efficiency of care delivery processes and outcomes, and the use of data including electronic health records (EHR) and clinical analytics to drive performance improvement.

Provides leadership and direction for day-to-day operational management ensuring optimal resource allocation. Trains, develops, and manages supervisors and department staff to ensure operational goals and customer needs are met while ensuring that information is processed efficiently, accurately, and in compliance with designated policies and procedures.

Develops and implements department specific customer service, human resource, and financial goals and objectives consistent with VMMC strategic plan and goals.

Performs all aspects of human resource management, including recruitment and retention, analyzing staff mix and deploying staff, ensuring competency of staff through development and regular evaluation, and providing disciplinary counseling.

Serves as an expert in clinical analytics applying strong analytical skills to gather information from users which can be used to inform and improve clinical practice and outcomes within the care delivery system. Supports the organization by leading the design and implementation of clinical data collection strategies, analysis and reporting to facilitate quality, performance improvement and research.

Understands patient care, human factors and process improvement methodologies, and is responsible for strategies that result in the effective design, development, and implementation of CDS. Develops an outcomes assessment program to monitor the impact of CDS metrics and uses the analysis to refine and improve the CDS metrics.

Fulfills an advisory role to both operational and medical staff leaders including but not limited to compliance, best practices and strategic improvement initiatives. Collaborates with physicians in research that would benefit from CDS tools. Provides consultation and support for patient safety and quality improvement projects.

Collaborates to prioritize and implement CDS solutions for quality reporting, including Meaningful Use objectives and Quality Measures, regulatory compliance and patient safety. Takes a leadership role in attaining compliance with Meaningful Use of the EHR, as it relates to Quality measures.

Leads organizational change initiatives; leads and supports staff in adapting to a rapidly changing health care environment.

A Bachelor's degree in healthcare related discipline, Business Administration or Finance and 5 years experience with advanced knowledge in a health care industry is required. Demonstrated knowledge of electronic health record technology and prior experience in implementing interventions to influence clinician behavior, improve quality and patient safety and reduce costs required. Strong analytical and project management skills required. Strong written and verbal communication skills required. Also required are strong leadership and change management skills to engage clinical leaders in managing accountabilities associated with enterprise clinical performance goals.

Master’s degree or higher in Healthcare Administration, Clinical Informatics or related field strongly preferred. Experience with process improvement methods including VMPS or Lean strongly preferred.
