The Cardiac Sonographer provides high-quality, diagnostic cardiac ultrasound evaluations which include anatomical, physiologic, and pathologic data to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

  • Independently performs transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) studies in accordance with established protocols.
  • Performs pharmacologic and treadmill stress echocardiograms.
  • Performs TTE, stress echocardiogram (SE) and dobutamine stress echocardiogram (DSE) studies at Virginia Mason satellite clinics on a routine basis.
  • On an on-going basis, provides technical guidance/training for ultrasound students.
  • Assists Cardiologists with transesophageal echocardiograms.
  • Participates in after hours (on-call) coverage.
  • Participates in on-going quality assurance, lab accreditation by The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (ICAEL), and special projects as assigned.

 


Qualifications

  • Graduation from a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs (CAAHEP)-accredited ultrasound program, and credentialing through the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS), required.
  • Training in cardiovascular sonography; and extensive knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, pathology and physics required.
  • Skill in performing echocardiographic studies in a variety of settings, including at the patient's bedside, required.
  • Ability to assist immobile and/or disabled patients
  • Ability to use reasoning and deduction in making medical judgments and to use sound judgement in the face of emergencies
  • Ability to be patient, flexible and maintain a high level of professional behavior required
  • Excellent interpersonal skills required.
  • 30 continuing medical education credits are required every 3 years to maintain ARDMS credential.
